Coast Guard med evacs woman from waters off Marco Island
MARCO ISLAND, Fla. - The U.S. Coast Guard medically evacuated a 51-year-old woman from the commercial fishing vessel Ana about 45 miles southwest of Marco Island early Monday morning.
Because of weather conditions using a helicopter wasn't possible so a crew from the Fort Myers Beach Coast Guard Station sent a ship to the fishing boat Ana to rescue the woman who was experiencing abdominal pain and shortness of breath.
The woman was transported back to the station in stable condition at 5:38 a.m., where local emergency medical personnel were waiting to transport her to Fort Myers Memorial Hospital.
"Due to the swift actions by the crew at Station Fort Myers Beach, the woman was able to get the medical attention she needed," said Kevin Coyne, an operations controller at Sector St. Petersburg. "Resources can suddenly become very complex when the patient is 60 miles from land and weather conditions make an air rescue impossible."
