NAPLES, Fla.- One of the fugitives wanted in a violent armed robbery outside a Naples jewelry store has been arrested in Texas.
A jewelry salesman was robbed outside of Thalheimers Jewelers on Tamiami Trail back in 2011.
Sandy Thalheimer, owner of Thalheimers Jewelers on US 41 remembers Feb. 8th 2011 clearly. In a matter of seconds, he decided to put up a fight and not just watch his jewelry salesman get robbed at gunpoint.
"When something like that happens to you in your life you remember the details every single day."
The robbery happened in the store's parking lot. That's when the jewelry store owner made the split decision to ram one of the get away cars. The robbers then ditched the car leaving behind plenty of evidence.
Sandy and the suspects exchanged fire.
"I wasn't going to let him shoot first at 20 feet so I fired. I knew exactly where I hit him, but he didn't go down," said Thalheimer.
The suspects then jumped into another getaway car and took off. Almost 2 years, one of the fugitives wanted in that armed robbery, Jose Cabezudo-Gomez has now been arrested in Carson County, Texas.
"The Texas Department of Public Safety made an arrest and they did find a fire arm with serial numbers scratched off and jewelry stolen inside the car as well," said Lt. John Barkley, Naples Police Department.
Lt. Barkley says Gomez was linked by DNA to the Naples robbery and to another armed robbery of a salesman in Texas.
"He was already in a DNA database from an arrest back in Georgia," said Lt. Barkley.
Sandy is glad at least one dangerous criminal is off the streets.
"If they take these guys of the street, it might have saved someone else's life down the road. They had no qualms shooting at me," said Thalheimer.
It is not known at this time when Cabezudo-Gomez will be brought back to Collier County to face charges.
Law enforcement is still looking for a second suspect in the Naples robbery, Jose Castillo.
