ESTERO, Fla. - A 54-year-old Estero man was struck and critically injured by a car Tuesday night trying to stop cats that were following him from crossing into traffic on U.S. 41 at Corkscrew Road.

William Sandberg was crossing U.S. 41 when he realized some cats were following him.  Witnesses say Sandberg turned to try and stop the cats from following him when he was struck by a Ford Mustang driven by 58-year-old Joseph DeSalvo.

The Florida Highway Patrol says De Salvo will not be cited.
