WFTX - November is National Diabetes Awareness month and this month the Florida Suncoast Chapter has teamed up with Pyure to help us raise awareness.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone that enables people to get energy from food.

Nearly 26 million Americans have diabetes and as many as 3 million Americans may have type 1 diabetes.

Diabetes currently affects 366 million people worldwide and is expected to affect 552 million by the year 2030.

Some of the warning signs of type 1 diabetes may occur suddenly and include:
Extreme Thirst
Frequent urination
Drowsiness or lethargy
Increased appetite
Sudden weight loss
Sudden vision changes

Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower limb amputations and new cases of blindness in young adults in the U.S. It is also a major cause of heart disease and stroke.

JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes research. Their mission is to discover, develop and deliver advances that better treat, prevent and ultimately cure type 1 diabetes.
