Homeowner surprises Port Charlotte burglar
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Charlotte County detectives arrested a Port Charlotte man Monday who thought he was breaking into an empty home.
The owner was inside and called law enforcement. When deputies arrived the suspect was sitting in a lanai charge and was arrested.
24-year-old Christopher Edward Boegli was charged with burglary and grand theft.
The owner said a man knocked on his front door and when he did not answer he saw the man go to the back of his home and enter his lanai. The man peeked into the home then tried to open the locked sliding doors. The burglar picked up several extension cords, put them inside a bucket on the lanai, and sat down.
The caller said when he heard deputy’s sirens approaching; the man did not move. Deputies located Boegli still sitting in the chair on the lanai with the bucket of extension cords and a CD inside valued at $125. Boegli was transported to a detective’s office and questioned about the burglary. He said he checked to see if anyone was home and thought no one was in the house. He said he was struggling financially when he saw the extension cords and thought about selling them for the copper wire scrap.
Detectives arrested Boegli and he was transported to the Charlotte County Jail where he remains on $45,000 bond. Boegli has a prior conviction for burglary, and, he is currently out on bond for retail theft that occurred Oct. 24 at the Murdock Wal Mart.
