Bridge accident leaves mess at I-75 and Daniels in South Fort Myers
FORT MYERS, Fla. - A costly accident could snarl traffic for weeks at the I-75 and Daniels overpass.
Wednesday a truck pulling a flatbed carrying a backhoe clipped the bridge spanning Daniels Parkway. The backhoe tore off large chunks of concrete and damaged the steel beams.
The driver of the truck, 57-year-old Glendell Edison, of Lehigh Acres, was cited for the accident, which snarled traffic in and around the bridge for hours.
The Florida Department of Transportation hopes that repairs to the bridge will be finished by early December.
ICA, the company responsible for bridge maintenance, will seek damages from the driver and his company.
Meanwhile the accident will create a traffic mess until the repairs are made. Two lanes northbound and one lane southbound on I-75 are expected to remain open to traffic during daytime hours. Night work may require the closure of an additional northbound lane.
The bigger headache is that eastbound Daniels Parkway has only one lane open to traffic currently.
The eastbound Daniels Parkway on-ramp to northbound I-75 will be closed during this project.
