Lack of ballot scanners lead to massive problems at the polls
Reports coming in of ballot scammers jammed up, causing huge delays
CAPE CORAL, Fla. - An absolute nightmare that's what the lee county supervisor of elections is saying. Sharon Harrington admits that the ballot scanners are getting jammed and causing problems but she says there's a simple explanation.
This is the first year voters have filled out a four page ballot and as they're feeding in the ballot to the scanner it gets jammed.
Because many voters are impatient and feeding all four pages into the machine without waiting for the screen to process them, this shuts down the machine. Each precinct only has one ballot scanner which confirms voters have cast their vote.
Harrington says workers are fixing the scanners everytime they shut down but while the machine is down the ballots are inserted into a secured oversized bid and they will be tallied.
Many voters contacted us saying they're concerned their vote will not count if they don't get the confirmation. But Harrington assures voters this is not the case. Harrington says the only thing she could do is request the county buy more ballot scanners.
This has never been an issue before because they've never had a four page ballot. Harrington and the mayor of Fort Myers have been getting plenty of angry phone calls about this. And she's sure there will be a backlash.
