Florida crime stats down, pattern true for Southwest Florida
TAMPA, Fla. - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement released its 2012 Semi-Annual Uniform Crime Report today showing a drop in crime volume for the first six months this year.
Crime fell 3.8 percent compared to the first six months of 2011.
According to the report,the number of violent crimes (murder, forcible sex offenses, robbery and aggravated assault) was down 5.3 percent. The report also shows an 8 percent drop in robberies and 5.4 percent drop in aggravated assault.
For Southwest Florida Lee County saw the biggest drop in crime. The crime rate plunged 12.4 percent for the first six months of 2012 compared to 2011. However, the number of murders jumped from 17 to 25 in 2012.
The crime rate drop in Collier County was 5.4 percent. The only increase was in burglaries which climbed from 703 to 787.
Charlotte County showed the smallest decline to 0.7 percent for the first six months of 2012 compared to 2011.
