FORT MYERS, Fla.- Sandy is having an impact on travel. Runways at LaGuardia Airport in New York are Flooded. The airport is closed and here in Southwest Florida more than 45 flights are cancelled at RSW because of Sandy.

Steve Hamilton might be stranded in Southwest Florida. His connecting flight headed to the Northeast has him worried.

"I'm hoping that the connection from Atlanta to Baltimore will be working here. I rather be here than Atlanta," said Hamilton.

Superstorm Sandy has stopped planes and stranded on passengers. At Southwest Florida International Airport, 153 flights were originally scheduled for Tuesday. Now nearly a third of them(46 flights) have been cancelled. Steve wants to get home to his wife in Baltimore.

"I feel kind of guilty because I left my wife to tend to the house alone and she's without power," said Hamilton.

RSW officials tell me flights to airports like LaGuardia, JFK, and Atlantic City have all been cancelled. Bill Sheehan is waiting for his son who decided days ago. He'd take an alternate route to get to Florida from New York.

"He left New York a couple days ago went to Raleigh went form Raleigh to Charlotte now coming in from Charlotte," said Bill Sheehan.

Bill's son is from Manhattan, one of the hardest hit areas. New York City's subway is shut down and the city is virtually cut off by rail, road and air.

Fox 4 caught up with Jim Walter at RSW. He was printing his boarding pass and keeping his fingers crossed he'd fly out on Wednesday.

"I'm anxious to get back to Philadelphia to check on our summer place in New Jersey," said Walter.

RSW officials say travelers should contact their carrier for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
