ESTERO, Fla. -  A semi-truck traveling southbound on I-75 just south of the Corkscrew interchange began swerving back and forth across the interstate clipping a Ford van before crashing into the median.

The accident shut down southbound I-75 for more than an hour.

The big rig hit the cable barrier in the medium before coming to rest while the driver of the van managed to pull over onto the shoulder.

Emergency crews had to cut the driver of the big rig out of his cab.  46-year-old Clarence Nauer of Cape Coral was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital in critical condition.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Nauer may have suffered some sort of medical episode which may have led to the accident.

The driver of the van, 46-year-old Allen Kentner of Fort Myers, suffered minor injuries.
