CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Fire officials think Halloween decorations might have caused a house fire in Cape Coral early Monday morning. The family was able to make it out thanks to the barks of their family dog. Halloween is one of the top 5 busiest fire days of the years.

More than 1,000 house fires begin every year because of mishaps involving seasonal decorations like lights and candles.

"We won't put too many devices on the same extension cord...realizing that there's more possibility of overloading the system," said John Cain, homeowner.

Here are some things you might want to consider when decorating your home for the holiday.

1. keep candles out of the walkways and out of the reach of trick-or-treaters.

2. Check for the UL mark on electrical decorations, extension cords and lights.  A red UL mark means the lights are good for indoor/outdoor use. A green UL mark means the lights are only certified for indoor use.

3. Also check lights for frayed wires. Throw out anything that is damaged.

"Some of the most common mistakes are: people overload outlets, they run extension cords together or too long and overload circuit panels," said East Naples Fire Chief Kingman Schuldt.
