TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida is making progress in its effort to stem the abuse of prescription drugs.

A new report released the state shows deaths caused by oxycodone plunged by 17.7 percent.  Overall prescription drug deaths dropped 6.37 percent.

The numbers reflect the efforts of a Statewide Drug Enforcement Strike Force that worked to close loopholes that allowed doctors and pharmacies to over prescribe pain bills.

Prescription and illegal drugs like cocaine and heroin were responsible for more than 9,000 deaths in Florida last year.
