Man arrested in 2 Port Charlotte beatings
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Charlotte County deputies arrested a Port Charlotte man Friday night for beating two people.
One of the victims, a 65-year-old woman, suffered a broken hip. The other victim, a 67-year-old man, also required medical treatment at an area hospital.
Deputies responded to a call at Sunshine Villas and found a man and woman lying on the ground in front of an apartment, both bloody and moaning.
The two say they were attacked by 56-year-old James Otis Byrd. One of the victims had gone to visit Byrd at his apartment and she told investigators the suspect became enraged for unknown reasons and started to attack. Byrd also attacked the 67-year-old man when he came to her defense.
Byrd was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with great bodily harm and battery on a person 65 or older. Byrd is in the Charlotte County Jail on $35,000 bond.
