Burglary of Charlotte County inmate leads to arrest
EL JOBEAN, Fla. - Charlotte County detectives a 39-year-old South Gulf Cove man for burglarizing the home of a woman currently incarcerated in the Charlotte County Jail.
The incident started with a call to the Sheriff's Office Wednesday afternoon concerning a reported burglary in progress in the 14000 block of Worthwhile Road in El Jobean.
Deputies contacted a neighbor who saw a man outside the home standing next to several household items on the ground including televisions, leather chairs, and suitcases. The neighbor called the inmates son who lives a few houses away. When the son arrived he asked what he was doing and the man said he was collecting his belongings as he used to live there.
The son, 25, said that was not true. The man then changed his story and said his mother owes him $800 and she gave him permission to pawn items to bond her out of jail. The man then walked away and was followed by both men who saw him get into a red car and drove off towards Englewood. The son of the woman in jail said he’s seen the man before and believed his name was Don.
Deputies contacted the woman at the jail and she said she did not give anyone permission to enter or remove anything. She advised the man’s name was Donald Costa and he never lived there. Costa was identified in a photo line up by the woman, her son and a neighbor.
Later that night deputies got a call about bizarre behavior by a man at the Port Charlotte Town Center Mall. Costa was found and arrested. Costa requested his computer bag and medications from his rental car in the mall parking lot. After being retrieved, a search found a pill bottle with 31 buprenorphine pills inside, a schedule-3 narcotic with no prescription.
Costa was taken to the Charlotte County Jail and charged with Burglary, Grand Theft, Possession of Buprenorphine, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Costa is a convicted felon and he remains in jail on no bond.
