Boy struck by lightning during football practice
FORT MYERS, Fla. – An 11-year-old student is in critical condition after being struck by ligtning Wednesday during a high school football practice.
Jesse Watlington walked onto the field at Southwest Florida Christian Academy around 4:30 p.m. when he was struck by lightning, according to police.
Watlington was rushed to the hospital and then airlifted to Tampa General Hospital.
The senior pastor at McGregor Baptist Church, which runs the school, is reaching out to the community for support.
“We're just calling our entire church family and all of the members of our Christian schools, Southwest Florida Christian Academy, to just pray earnestly," said Rev. Richard Powell, "that God will give him complete recovery very soon."
No one else was injured during the lightning strike.
