HOUSTON - The Friday night lights are coming on tonight around southwest Florida as the new week of high school football kicks into full throttle.
But a popular tradition at school football games is being called into question and it's garnering national attention.
It's a feud over faith and football and it's playing out both on a off the field.
At one Texas high school, students have been told to stop painting scriptures on the break-away signs that football players run through before the start of a game.
Cheerleaders write the verses as a source of inspiration, but the school board is banning them, after receiving complaints that the banners are infusing religion into school sponsored activities. That decision is creating quite the debate.
“You shouldn't mix things like religion and school because not everyone has the same religion.” Ayala says.
“They are able to put all that other trash on there, and I believe they should have as many bible verses as they want.” Rice says.
The students behind the banners have a Facebook page for their protest and more than 33,000 people have signed up on it.
The school district says it has no plans on reversing its decision.
