Medicare and change among the day's campaign topics
(AP) - President Barack Obama and Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan are attacking one another over their plans for Medicare.
Both addressed their comments to older voters at an AARP convention in New Orleans.
In a video address, Obama criticized Ryan's call for a voucher program, saying it will hurt future Medicare recipients.
Ryan addressed the convention in person and said Obama's health care overhaul harms Medicare for today's seniors and threatens it for the next generation.
Obama also poked Romney today over his secretly recorded comment that he doesn't have to worry about winning the support of the 47 percent of Americans who don't pay income taxes and are dependent on government.
At a rally in Virginia, Obama said change is needed in Washington, and that "it can't happen if you write off half the nation" before you take office.
Romney's campaign is focusing on Obama's statement yesterday that you can't change Washington from the inside. The Republicans say Obama is admitting that he failed to deliver the hope and change he promised four years ago.
Meanwhile, Romney is releasing his tax returns for 2011. His campaign says they show that Romney and his wife paid an effective tax rate of 14.1 percent last year on income of $13.7 million.
