Fort Myers Republican women respond to Romney comments
FORT MYERS, Fla. - It seems everyone has an opinion on the presidential candidate Mitt Romney's comments about the 47%.
So Fox 4 spent a little time at the Fort Myers Republican Women's Club Luncheon today where there were no shortage of opinions.
A life size Mitt Romney cut-out greets you to the luncheon.
Inside about 100 of the area's most politically active Republican women.
The club's legislative chair tells us the campaign trail is grueling and Romney might not have said what he meant.
"When you're on stage 24/7, it's not easy. You get tired, and so I think Governor Romney may have misstated," says Marilyn Stout.
Tallahassee lobbyist Carole Green says Romney might have felt a little too at ease behind those closed doors.
"I think that what he did is, he let his guard down a little bit. He was talking to room full of donors," Green tells us.
And although he likely had no idea he was being recorded... "People need to be aware of that fact that they're always on. It doesn't matter who you're talking to. You have to be very careful about your words because words can be very hurtful," adds Green.
Florida's State Senator Lizbeth Benacquisto present but did not care to comment.
And yet others were downright hostile that we were present, like former Cape Coral councilman Peter Brandt.
"You're just trying to make something out of nothing. It must be a slow news day.Yeah, its true. He just made a comment about something that's true," Brandt tells us.
And yet others support Romney's comments
"When you have 47% of those kinds of people, they don't want to work their way up. They're used to that kind of life," adds a woman who preferred not to give her name.
No one seemed to think the comments would prove to be a hurdle for the candidate, if not just a bump in the road.
And all looked forward to the debates, where they said the best candidate would shine.
