FGCU group advocates to overturn gun laws
FORT MYERS, Fla. - It's illegal in Florida to carry a gun on a college campus like FGCU. But an area student organization wants to change that.
FGCU freshman Daniel Fritz says some students should be allowed to carry concealed weapons on campus.
"There should be certain testing that students have to take to be able to have them on campus but i feel like there should always be an option," said Fritz.
An option a new student organization, Eagles for Concealed Carry, wants to make happen. After a viewer sent Fox 4 a picture of the group's flier, we set out to find out more.
"Would u join a group like this?" asked Fox 4 reporter Gabrielle Sarann to Fritz. "Yes, I would."
After asking whether students know of the group, we discovered fliers in several student halls and their Facebook page, with 71 likes. The goal is for lawmakers to overturn Florida's gun laws prohibiting concealed carry weapons at schools and colleges.
"Keep them the way they are, no guns," said McKenzie Oliver, a freshman.
Oliver worries guns could get in the wrong hands.
"Some people might not be as stable and some people might take advantage of it," added Oliver.
A university spokesman says she's never heard of the group and wouldn't comment. But like it or not, some students say it comes down to safety.
"In the parking garages late at night some people have late classes like some people who are in there might try to commit a crime maybe rob you," said Brandon Coleman, a freshman.
