Golden Gate neighborhood complains about traffic concerns from nearby school
NAPLES- Traffic trouble in Collier County! Homeowners in a Golden Gate neighborhood say their street becomes a nightmare when a nearby school lets out.
Golden Gate Terrace Elementary sits right in the middle of a neighborhood in Naples. There is hardly any traffic on the road during the daytime, but neighbors say that changes shortly before the last school bell rings.
"Traffic is up and down the road and all the way around the school. It's in the driveways over on 46th Street, all the way up to 44th," said Alex Beattie, neighbor.
Neighbors showed Fox 4 pictures of the traffic. The photos show a row of cars lining up to get to the school. Bruce Powell has lived in the neighborhood for 18 years. He says the traffic becomes congested at least 30 minutes before school lets out.
"As much as I don't like to do it, I have to time my day around the school. I think they could be better neighbors," said Bruce Powell who has lived in the neighborhood for 18 years.
Neighbors are not sure what can be done, but suggest a crossing guard or maybe extra patrols from the Sheriff's Office.
I took these concerns to the Collier County School District. The district tells Fox 4 the principal has been on her golf cart at dismissal time patrolling the streets and monitoring the situation. She is also there to assist if a homeowner needs to get in or out of the driveway.
The district tells Fox the school is located within a neighborhood and parents are lining up where they should be. There are no other options, but neighbors argue the school should do more to be good neighbors.
The Collier County Sheriff's Office also tells Fox they are away of the situation and traffic should be better in the next 3 weeks. Sheriff's Office says after the first couple weeks of school, less parents pick up their child and students will either walk home or ride the bus.
