Big rig crash shuts down westbound lanes on Alligator Alley for a time
COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - A tractor-trailer truck crashed into a canal on westbound I-75 closing down both lanes of traffic for nearly an hour.
Witnesses tell the Florida Highway Patrol the big rig drifted into the median before crossing the westbound lanes, crashing through a fence, before coming to rest in a canal.
The semi was left fully submerged and the driver was rescued by a group of witnesses including a state trooper, Collier deputies and firefighters. The driver was sent to Lee Memorial by Med Flight and he was conscious and breathing.
The FHP identified the driver as 39-year-old Eduardo Perez of Tampa. The FHP has not revealed why he lost control of his truck.
