Collier Co. mom says 5-year-old is placed on the wrong school bus
IMMOKALEE, Fla. - Confusion on a Collier County bus! The mom of a 5-year-old wants to know how her daughter could have been dropped off at the wrong stop before finally getting picked back up and taken to the right location.
Four in Your Corner's Julie Salomone has been working to get her answers from the district.
Diadra Bryce is furious after her 5-year-old's first day of school.
She says her child started Kindergarten on Monday with a smile, but came home visibly upset.
"When my daughter comes home, she tells me mommy I was so scared," said Diadra Bryce.
Her 5-year-old goes to Eden Park Elementary in Immokalee. Diadra says she went to pick her daughter up at the bus stop, but when she did not arrive on time, the school called her.
"I get a phone call saying she's not on the bus. She was put on another bus."
Diadra says her child was dropped off at the wrong stop and just left alone. She says another bus then came and picked her child up after the school learned of the mistake.
"She says ya I got off the bus and I couldn't find you. I couldn't find home. I was scared and crying."
I took this mother's concerns to the district who tells me a different story. The district says the bus driver who was suppose to take the child home never left school after the driver noticed the 5-year-old was missing. The driver alerted other buses assigned to Eden Park and the school tracked down the 5-year-old on another bus which took her back to school. The child was eventually placed on the right bus and it left school on its normal route. Diadra's daughter was about 30 minutes late coming home from school.
Diadra insists the district needs to do more and does not even understand how she got on the wrong bus.
"It's not like you lost her backpack. You lost my daughter."
So how did the school make this mistake? The district tells me they assume because the 2 bus numbers were similar (Bus 777 and Bus 717).
