Candidate takes campaign to new heights
Tax Collector candidate uses cherry picker to grab attention
LEE COUNTY, Fla. - On the eve of election night candidates are hitting the streets and scrambling for last minute votes. One candidate for Lee County Tax Collector is taking his campaign to new heights, literally. Four in your Corner's Mike Mason has more on this one in the race for tax collector.
There are only 2 candidates going head to head tomorrow. But today one used a tactic that some say is way over the top. Candidate Kyle Lee taking on incumbent Larry Hart for Lee County Tax Collector. Lee is a local business man.
Kyle Lee: "I stand for smaller government, customer service. I mean that office needs to be run like a business."
Hart's the incumbent and former Chief of police.
Larry Hart: "I'm using my leadership skills that I've been given over the years and I think the community can tell the difference."
Both men campaigning on the last day before elections but Lee is doing something unusual; hoping to rise above the competition by using a cherry picker.
Chelsey Funderburg – Lee Supporter ; "He wants to do it he wants to be in there and this is a great way to show it and a great way to get attention that's for sure."
Kyle Lee is getting attention and he's getting wet. Waving his sign 60 feet above Colonial Boulevard during rush hour in the pouring rain.
Spectator: "Kyle's nuts."
Nevertheless, my photographer, Noel, hopping inside the bucket with Lee to get his viewpoint on things.
Kyle Lee: "Just doing what we can to get our message out and our name out there and encourage people to go vote no matter what candidate they chose or what candidate they vote for. We're standing in about 4 - 5 inches of water it's been getting rained on thankfully there's been no lightning so."
But that may not be true, even we noticed a few flashes.
Mike Mason: "Hey did you guys see any lightning?
Man: "Yeah, we saw lightning today it was bad."
Another man: "There was one good crack just a minute or two ago."
While Lee hopes to strike a chord with voters, Hart says his campaign is grounded in experience.
Mike Mason: "So what do you think about your opponent going up on a cherry picker 60 feet in the air?"
Larry Hart: "I don't have any comment about my opponent, I'm running on Larry Hart and Larry Hart's proven leadership skills."
Larry Hart was appointed tax collector by Governor Rick Scott two months ago after the former tax collector died. Prior to that, he served as assistant tax collector for 11 years. Both he and Kyle Lee plan to be out waving signs again tomorrow.
