Viewers fired up over more traffic tickets by Fort Myers police
FORT MYERS, Fla. - Had a traffic ticket recently? You are not alone.
Fort Myers police have written so many citations the department is on track to set a new record for 2012. That has many of you fired up.
"The police officers themselves and police departments are under an incredible amount of stress right now financially and otherwise." Attorney Peter Dennis said
That stress is the reason, attorney Peter Dennis speculates, FMPD has written 14,000 traffic tickets between January and July of 2012. But in that same time frame, an unnerving wave of violence has struck the city, as it marks its 16th murder. And that has many of you fired up.
Bill, Ft. Myers: "The revenue is not important. Getting and stopping the crime off the streets is more important."
Myron, Cape Coral: "They're interested in giving people tickets, not watching for the crimes that are committed."
In response to our questions about the increase in citations -- Police Chief Doug Baker says that traffic crashes are down six percent this year compared to the same time period last year. That has Frank calling in defense of the department.
Frank, Ft. Myers: "Ft. Myers Police Department is doing their job, and everybody complains when they don't. Now they're doing their job and they're still complaining."
