Lee County Superintendent gets security protection
FORT MYERS - Some Fox 4 viewers have a question about the man accompany Lee County Superintendent Dr. Joseph Burke at area schools on the first day of classes.
One viewer wrote to us asking why Burke had a security escort when he made the rounds on Wednesday.
We called the district. A spokesman confirms Burke was accompanied by the school's Security Director, who is a sworn law enforcement officer.
"As Director of Security part of his duties include being at public events with the superintendent if it's determined there is a need," said spokesman Joe Donzelli. "That determination is made on a case-by-case basis and any 'costs' are included in the salary."
The district did not know off hand how much you're paying for that protection.
