New information: Details emerge on Retherford shootout
NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. - The U.S. Marshals Service released its version of events that led to a deadly shootout involving murder suspect Billy Ray Retherford.
The Marshals Service joined the manhunt for Retherford on July 31st, a week after the murder of Debra Striano in San Carlos Park. The Lee County Sheriff's Office had named Retherford as a suspect in the killing after arresting his nephew Dustin Jaye.
A tip on Tuesday from a citizen through Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers led the U.S. Marshals Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force to a duplex at 1231 Laurel Drive in North Fort Myers.
Officers identified Retherford through a window of the duplex sitting on a coach.
According to the Marshals Service upon entry officers realized that Retherford was armed with a handgun which he raised. Task Force officers fired at Retherford several times, striking him and killing him.
