Suspected killer Billy Ray Retherford killed in police encounter
NORTH FORT MYERS - Wanted murderer Billy Ray Retherford killed overnight following an encounter with Lee County Sheriff’s deputies.
Deputies were called to the scene 1200 block of Laurel Drive in North Fort Myers just after midnight. They were told Retherford was in the area.
Task Force members located Retherford, who was armed, and shots were fired. Retherford died at the scene. No Task Force members were injured during the incident.
A few hours before locating Retherford Tuesday night, the Lee County Sheriff's Office was called to the scene of another homicide at 3562 Sable Springs Boulevard.
"The Sable Springs incident is believed to be directly related to the events surrounding the scene on Laurel Lane where Billy Ray Retherford’s life of crime came to an end. The residents of Sabal Springs and parents with children at North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts have nothing to fear," said Sheriff Mike Scott.
Retherford has been on the run since the July 24th murder of Debra Striano in the Three Oaks Community of South Fort Myers. His nephew and accomplice, Dustin Jaye, was arrested on July 31st for his role in the murder.
