Southwest Florida moms and babies are invited to break breastfeeding world record
Fort Myers, Fla. —The Lee County Health Department plans to participate for the first time in breaking a world record for the most nursing children latched on to mothers at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 3, 2012, in six locations throughout Lee and Hendry counties.
The Women Infants and Children (WIC) staff encourages all breastfeeding women to be a part of the 2012 record. The Big Latch On United States record, set in 2011, was 5,687. The international record, set in 2010 by 16 countries at 325 sites, was 9,826.
“The Big Latch On is a lot of fun,” said Betsey Lunsford, IBCLC, WIC breastfeeding coordinator. “At 10:30 a.m., the moms who have their children latched on for one minute are counted as they get to talk with each other, make new friends and be a part of a national or world record!”
The goals of the Big Latch On include increasing support for women who breastfeed, advocating for accessible breastfeeding support services, supporting breastfeeding in public places, raising awareness of breastfeeding support available in the communities and making breastfeeding a normal part of the day-to-day life in the local community.
Breastfeeding is proven to be healthier for both babies and mothers.
The Big Latch On was introduced to the United States in 2010, but originated in New Zealand in 2005 to increase the number of and support for breastfeeding women.
