Job-seekers heading 'under the laser' to lose their tattoos and get jobs
WFTX - Having trouble getting a job? It's possible your resume could be fine and there's something else turning off a potential employer - your tats.
These days, more and more people are making sure that doesn't happen
The Vice President of a major employment agency, Melanie Holmes says the motivation is simple.
"It may not be fair, but I do believe that appearance is extremely important to employers looking for employees to work in their organization."
Laser technician Renee Walters has removed thousands of tat from peole who want them gone.
"The majority of them I do get is someone changing careers, or maybe someone trying to better themself in a career," she says.
Whether for personal or professional reasons, tattoo removal is big business!
"Getting tattoos is on the rise, so only makes sense tattoo removal is on the rise as well," says plastic surgeon Dr. Mark Blake.
The employement agency, "Manpower Group" puts over 3 million people to work every year.
The vice president, Melanie Holmes, isn't surprised to see the rise in tattoo removal.
"Employers, particularly when they are in customer service and dealing with the public have a right to have their employees look a certain way, says Holmes.
But she says not all job seekers need to consider getting rid of their tats.
"If I were a job seeker, and had visible tattoos, I would do some research and find companies accepting of tattoos in the workplace," says Holmes.
"There are companies that are. It doesn't mean you can never get a job."
Some people with tattoos say it's not worth taking a chance.
"Don't get a tattoo in an area you would have to get it removed someday."
Because in this economy a little ink could mean a lot of hassle in the end.
Tattoo removal isn't cheap.
The laser procedure we saw runs about $200 per session and usually takes about 6 to 7 sessions.
There is program out there called "Lose the tattoos".
It offers free tattoo removal to gang members who want to turn their lives around.
