PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Charlotte County detectives say a Punta Gorda man took advantage of the elderly when he accepted payment for a job he never completed.

David Paul Bamber, 33, was arrested Tuesday and is facing charges of exploitation of the elderly and grand theft.

Detectives say Bamber entered into a contract with the 72-year-old victim about a year ago to paint and seal his driveway.  The victim paid $2,750 to Bamber, who agreed to have the work completed within a month.  He never performed the work.

Bamber was arrested at the Charlotte County Jail where he has been locked up for several months on unrelated charges.

Lt. Jim Kirdy warns citizens not to pay for work  ahead of time.  He says any legitimate contractor will tell you the same.

Anyone who believes they may be victim to a similar crime is asked to call the Punta Gorda Police Department at (941) 639-4111.
