Viewers comment on US soldier accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians
He's being described as level-headed and experienced. But that doesn't describe a person accused of killing 16 Afghan civilians.
If Staff Sergeant Robert Bales does stand trial, he will face justice here in the United States.
But not all of FOX 4 viewers agree with that decision.
Robert Durham has known Staff Sgt. Robert Bales all his life. Bales grew up next door to him.
"People are people to him. I never heard him say that he hated anyone." Robert Durham says.
Like most, Durham was horrified to hear about an American soldier who allegedly gunned down 16 Afghan villagers door to door.
"I can't believe it. The Bobby I knew is not the Bobby that could have done that."
Bales' lawyer says the soldier's multiple deployments may have played a factor in the alleged crimes.
"Everyone that has had three or four deployments through the Middle East is probably going to have some form of PTSD. I don't know anything specific about it...I know he had a concussive head injury... which can be as serious... if not more serious than PTSD." John Henry Browne says.
Bales is currently being held in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas' military prison.
If he does stand trial, it will be here in the United States. And that has many of you voicing your opinions.
Debra saying: “Within the U.S. they take you back to where your crime was committed or do we only claim to be American when it fits us best? United we stand and united we fall.”
Jason arguing: “If the situation was reversed, they would demand that one of their people be tried on their own land. The same needs to be done for one of our own. He needs to be tried in America.”
Nicole posting on Facebook: “Personally I think they should ship his sorry butt back there to stand trial. I don't believe he should be able to hide behind his citizenship or military now.”
Daniel commenting: “He is a hero and should be given an award.”
