CAPE CORAL, Fla. - With Sunday services packed and membership more than double, Cape Christian Fellowship Church faced a dilemma: to expand or build a state-of-the-art park at its doorstep?
"We've scrapped those plans," said lead pastor Wes Furlong. "We're building Fellowship Park."
The park would be for everyone.
"We'll own it, we'll operate it but it's open to the public," added Furlong.
More than two acres of church property, from the sign in the grass in the parking lot, will be transformed into Fellowship Park.
"An amphitheater for about 6,000 people, four large play areas, including the only splash pad in Cape Coral, a jogging path around the lake, covered seating areas," explained Furlong.
"The name will be perfect, Fellowship Park," said church member David Rodriguez.
The price tag is $800,000. A wise use of church money says the Rodriguez family. All dressed in their Sunday best.
"I'm excited that it could be something that would be utilized seven days a week, pretty much 24 hours a day," said Jennifer Rodriguez.
Phase one will be done by Easter.
"The courtyard, the baptism fountain and all the front areas leading up to the play areas," explained Furlong.
Member Sarah Barbot's looking forward to enjoying the new park after church.
"I think it's pretty cool," said Barbot.
She says it's symbolic of Cape Christian's dedication to the area.
"They could have put it back into the church and they decided to spread the love to their city," added Barbot. "That's what it's all about."
Construction begins in two weeks. All funds for the park are being privately raised.
