LEHIGH ACRES- A Fort Myers man has been charged with Attempted Murder in Lehigh Acres shooting. Darwin Mejia, 18, of 8192 Egret Road, was arrested after a deputy conducted a traffic stop.

Last night around 11:08, Lee County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a shooting at 2701 21st Street SW in Lehigh Acres. Several people were at the house for a party when they all heard a knock at the door. The victim, Christopher Aleman, 21, of 310 Poplar Street in Lehigh Acres, opened the door and was immediately shot in the face with a handgun. The bullet struck Aleman in the left cheek. He was airlifted to the hospital as a trauma alert.

Following the shooting, the suspect fled to a nearby wooded area. A deputy patrolling the area was flagged down by witnesses who told him the suspect may have fled in a small gray car.

Another deputy responding to the call observed a vehicle driving away from the scene that matched the information being broadcast to all responding units. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle and part of a handgun could be seen through the back window under the driver’s seat. The driver was identified Darwin Mejia; he was wearing gloves and clothing that matched descriptions given by witnesses.

Further investigation revealed that Mejia deliberately went to the address to shoot and kill individuals within the home.
