Viewers respond to non-violent inmates possibly freed to save money
WFTX - Some in Florida would like to see non-violent inmates freed In order to save your tax dollars.
A group called Florida Tax Watch says overcrowding is an issue that's only putting a strain on state and local governments.
The group is suggesting a few alternatives:
- Using electronic monitoring as an alternative to prison
- Authorizing parole for certain inmates who were juveniles when sentenced and are older now.
- Reclassifying low level drug possession as a misdemeanor., which could reduce or even eliminate prison time in some cases.
Under current Florida law, inmates that are not convicted murderers or rapists, must serve at least 85% of their sentence in order to be eligible for parole.
