Salvation Army desperate for food donations
FORT MYERS - Mike and Mary Jean Cherevko have been living in their car since February. Their trunk is their closet. The backseat is where one sleeps while the other sleeps upfront in one of the car seats. They both lost their jobs, their home, and they eat and get canned good from the salvation army in Fort Myers. Living in their car is ther only shelter.
"It's hot and sweaty and dirty and uncomfortable. We take it one day at a time," said Mary Jean Cherevko.
The Salvation Army has never seen area folks in so much hardship.
"We're seeing a record need this economy has hurt us in a way I have never seen," said Merrilu Bennet of the Salvation Army.
Take a look for yourself. Empty shelves in the food pantry tell this story. Area families in record numbers seeking food. Times have become that difficult.
"This is the first time that we have this situation this bad and we are facing crisis," said Bennett.
And that's why they are asking you to dig deep and give food and monetary donations if your able.
"The need right now is food," said Bennett.
Christine Moser depends on the food pantry and soup kitchen to survive.
"It's the only place I can come to eat," said Moser.
And all that is left for some folks is hope.
If you want to give food donations or monetary donations you can drop them off at the Salvation Army on Edison Avenue in Fort Myers.
