FPL to help Northeast recover from Hurricane Irene outages
WASHINGTON D.C.- Florida Power and Light has deployed 100 of its employees and contractors from South Florida to Washington to support local recovery efforts following Hurricane Irene. The FPL convoy left about 8:30 this morning and is expected to travel about 500 miles today. They will arrive at their destination tomorrow and are expected to be active for at least a week. More support from FPL is possible if requested.
Before making the decision to send help, FPL made sure its customers were taken care of: that the storm had cleared FPL’s service territory and no other storms were on the immediate horizon, and that FPL would be able to continue to provide customers with reliable electricity.
FPL has sent resources to help areas impacted by extreme weather events such as Hurricane Ike in Texas. Most recently, we sent crews to assist in the wake of the devastating tornadoes in Alabama.
