CAPE CORAL, FLA — Some Floridians are stuck in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria disrupted flights.

A Cape Coral couple has been stuck on the island since September 17th.

“A lot of panic and fear,” said Sarah Rivera through a Skype call with 4 In Your Corner. “We don’t know how long we have to be here for,” she added.

The Riveras tried to get off the island before Hurricane Maria hit, but American Airlines cancelled their flight. The couple was forced to ride out the category 4 storm before they attempted to rebook with American Airlines.

“We kept calling constantly,” said Rivera.

Rivera says American Airlines told them Hurricane Maria broke some of their equipment needed to fly in and out of the island.

“That’s why we keep getting cancelled,” she added.

The airline told them next Monday might be their day.

“We got rescheduled for today, got cancelled, and now they rescheduled for October 2nd,” she said.

The couple hopes their flight stays on schedule.

“I told my husband if they cancel again, I might lose it,” said Rivera.

Sarah and her husband Johnny do have someone who is waiting anxiously for them to return.

“I don’t know if I’ll even have a sign, I’ll probably just be crying,” said Joann Manti, Sarah’s mother.

4 In Your Corner reached out to American Airlines to see what fliers like the Riveras can do to get reimbursed for all the extra nights they had to spend in a hotel. The airline has not responded yet.
