FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A call is going out to help feed families in our community.  The Salvation Army says they're in urgent need of 5,000 canned food items at its Fort Myers food pantry.

They say the demand is so high right now because kids are out of class, so they're not getting those meals at school.

The pantry says they see more than 125 families a week and hand out more than 2,000 cans.

"We at the Salvation Army would be honored if you would consider even looking in your shelves tonight, and looking at what you could give, or going to the grocery store and spending a little money, and just picking up some canned food: canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned protein, and just giving a bag or so to us, and bringing it down to donate it to us so we could put it on our shelves and give out during our pantry days to people in need."

You can drop-off non-perishables like canned meat, sauces, dried beans, rice, peanut butter, and baby food at the Salvation Army's Outreach Services Center at 2475 Edison Avenue from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
