NAPLES, Fla. - Although it's not red tide, Florida Fish and Wildlife says a patchy bloom of Trichodesmium has been reported along the beaches from Naples Pier to Caxambas Pass.

Trichodesmium is a marine blue-green algae that produces odors and varies in color from brown, green, pink or white.

The bloom can have the appearance of sawdust or an oil slick on the water’s surface.

FWC says that while this algae is certainly unpleasant looking, it is not known to have any toxic effects and it does not pose any human health concerns.
