LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- When Hurricane Irma Came pounding on Southwest Florida's door two weeks ago, many schools opened their doors to people escaping Irma's wrath. Some of those schools took in an unprecedented number of people and animals for more than 12 days.

Now, weeks later, the schools have emptied out and parents want to know what is being done to make sure their kids are returning to a safe and clean environment. Four in your corner visited South Fort Myers High School today.

“The maintenance department along with some outside companies that were lined up, were ready to come in as soon as the shelters were closed. In fact, once the storm passed and people left the shelter, we consolidated to a new shelter and closed thee others,” says Matthews.

The principal told us that the school took in more than four thousand people on the first day alone. They also sheltered 500 animals.

When the storm passed, they say they had crews on standby that were ready to clean up and get the school back to how it was before Hurricane Irma hit.

“That way we could get into the others immediately and start cleaning and that’s what happened. And they’ve done everything from air quality, to scrubbing, cleaning the carpets and all those things. And as you will probably see today, the schools are in great shape and ready to go for Monday.”
The staff had to clean up after the shelter evacuees and the storm. Irma damaged several schools across southwest Florida.

Schools in Lee and Collier County will resume on Monday.
