Fatal crash forces shutdown of northbound Michael G. Rippe Parkway Monday

LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A vehicle crash was causing traffic issues in South Fort Myers Monday afternoon.

The crash happened at approximately 11:11 a.m. along Michael G. Rippe Parkway near the intersection with Briarcliff Road.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, a southbound minivan made a left turn into the path of a northbound pickup truck.  The van's driver, 92-year-old Joseph Cooke of Fort Myers, was taken to Gulf Coast Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The pickup truck's driver suffered minor injuries.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office shut down the northbound lanes of Michael G. Rippe Parkway for several hours Monday.
