SANIBEL ISLAND, Fla. -- A driver led police on a high speed chase on the Sanibel Causeway during Memorial Day weekend festivities, and part of it was caught on camera.

The incident reportedly happened Sunday, around 6 P.M. A video clip shows a silver BMW speeding down the busy road, and an unmarked police car chasing after it, with sirens on. Fox 4 viewer Rico Martinez, who captured the video, said he saw a cloud of dust after the car peeled out, and then he started recording with his cellphone. "I can't really expect a cop chase every day," he said.

Martinez said the car weaved in and out of two-lane traffic to get away. "There were a lot of people around, especially yesterday," he said. "Somebody could've gotten hurt."

Since the car chasing the speeder was unmarked, it's unknown which agency was attempting the traffic stop. However, Sanibel Police told 4 In Your Corner the Lee County Sheriff's Office is responsible for traffic on the bridge. The speed limit on the road is only 35 miles per hour.

It's unknown if the person in the speeding sports car got away because the sheriff's office is closed in observance of Memorial Day, but park rangers could be seen monitoring the area on Monday. It's advised that drivers use caution on the roads, especially on the beach, because of the congestion during the holiday weekend.
