Burglars are targeting cars in a gated community in North Fort Myers.

Three cars were broken into on Sail Away Street and Turtle Cove Trail on Monday in Moody River Estates. People living there said these burglaries are just the latest of many in the last few weeks.

Chris Johnson's truck was broken into two weeks ago. The burglars shattered the driver's side window.

"It was locked and so they somehow stuck a screw driver or something in, brought it out and it shattered," Johnson said.

Johnson said he's lived in Moody River Estates for six years, and right now they're seeing an uptick in break-ins and burglaries. He said when his car was broken into, the crooks got away with some headphones, cologne, and $10.

"It was $500 to replace the window," Johnson said.

On Monday, his wife's car was hit by burglars. Four purses with money inside were stolen from the car.

"Monday when my wife's car was hit, there's another house on the other side of the community. My brother in law lives a mile away, and his vehicle was hit last week," Johnson said.

He said security in the gated community could use some work.

"The security is not so much that. They drive around, maybe somewhat of a deterrent," Johnson said.

Monday evening while walking their dog, Johnson's wife found her purses in the bushes down the street. The thieves made off with all the cash left inside and are still on the run.

"Eventually their time will run out and they'll get caught, and they'll regret it," he said.
