LOS ANGELES - The "King of Queens" is trying to become the king of the ring - or at least the cage.

In his latest movie, Here Comes The Boom, Kevin James is taking up mixed martial arts.

He plays a former college wrestler turned burnt out high school teacher.

He gets his groove back by moonlighting as a mixed martial arts fighter.

"I used the real fighters from UFC," Kevin told Fox 4's Patrick Nolan.

"So you're teaching them to miss the target - which is crazy because they've been taught their whole lives to hit the target," said Kevin.

"So I got tagged a lot," he adds.

"The scenes where they slow it down - those were the real (hits,) adds co-star and former UFC heavyweight champion Bas Rutten.

Kevin told Patrick the best part of the movie was working with his co-stars.

"To make something with people inspired me, like Bas," he said.

"And being able to work with Henry Winkler - all these guys together. And Salma Hayek."

Kevin's character kisses Salma's character through the cage at one point in the movie.

"That was by design, you can't let a bear get too close," joked Kevin.

"It was to hold HER back from going crazy?" asked Patrick teasingly.

"She's the bear. Right!" Kevin said.

Kevin trained with real fighters for the role, shedding pounds and  collecting a lot of bruises.

"That's why the movie stopped by filming, I went back to being out of shape and living like a sand bar," he joked.

"And this is why America loves you, we can relate to you," Patrick told him.

"You looked flexible in this movie," Patrick said.

"Were those really your legs kicked at a 90 degree angle from your body?" Patrick asked.

"Actually it was Jett Lee," interjected Bas.

"That's right," said Kevin laughing.

"Stunt leg!"

Kevin said it was his body doing the kicking, punching and blocking.

Kevin's character takes up mixed martial arts as to make enough money to save the school's music program.

"Glee" star Charice also plays a role and sings - creating some tear jerking moments.

"What kind of message do you want young people to get from this movie," asked Patrick.

"To basically do the best you can and inspire others," said Kevin.

Here Comes The Boom is rated PG.

It hits theaters starting at midnight, Thursday, October 11th.
