Charlotte County bank urging drivers to "Stop for the Bus"
PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla.-
Are your kids walking through a school bus danger zone? It has become a big problem in Southwest Florida. Cars flying by, ignoring hazard lights when students are getting on and off.
While Charlotte County kids are enjoying spring break this week, school officials and local businesses are gearing up for a big campaign. Charlotte State Bank and Trust President Craig DeYoung said drivers are breaking the law at an alarming rate, by zooming past stopped school buses.
"With 90 violations in one given day, I could imagine that could result in a horrific accident." DeYoung said.
A horrific scene, DeYoung said he never wants to witness. So next week his bank signs will show a different slogan. "Stop the bus, our kids are worth it."
" Whatever we can do to reduce the amount of liability for these kids and amount of accidents that could take place is something we need to do." DeYoung said.
Port Charlotte is just one of many cities in Southwest Florida worried children are in danger. FOX4 has told you before about parents in Lee County outraged as they watched cars ignore flashing bus lights. Charlotte County Schools spokesman Mike Reilly said something has to be done.
because one small mistake could cause a lifetime of sorrow.
"With the smaller children, they have a tendency to dart out toward their bus when they get off the bus to walk, they think it's safe to go. We realize people are in a hurry everyday everywhere they go but this is gonna ticket you and cause you to slow down or if you hit someone it'll definitely cause you to slow down." Reilly said.
