LEE COUNTY, Fla. - The tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School is still sparking gun debates and other suggestions to keep kids safe at school.

Our station has been flooded with calls, emails, and texts expressing sorrow for the incident and ways to keep schools safer.

Sales for bullet proof backpacks have gone through the roof according to one company who makes them.

"Our armor was being bought to protect people. At this point, it's transcended to everyone. Anyone who's sending out a child into the world, seeing what can happen now, they want to protect their children", said Rich Brand.

Patrick from Naples called our station with one suggestion.

"Gun rights don't even have to be affected. Put an armed officer in every single school and nobody is going to go to that school and do what they can do and what happened in Newtown."

"If they can put federal marshals on planes then they can put an officer in every school in the United States", said Jim.

Marty from Fort Myers agreed and added to that. "Let the teachers carry weapons too. This can happen anywhere in the country", he said.

One text we received said, "School Administrators should be armed with Tazers.  They are safe, they don't kill but can effectively neutralize an intruder and keep our children safe."

President Barack Obama is promising to send ideas to congress next month.
