Funeral protest debate in Florida
In Newtown Connecticut, parents are hugging their children much tighter than usual in the wake of the elementary school shooting that took 20 young lives and six adults. One girl's name is Emily. just six years old,her father now preparing for a funeral.
But a religious demonstration is being planned at some of those victims funerals.
The Westboro Baptist Church out of Topeka, Kansas known for protesting military funerals is planning to bring their protest of America's acceptance of gays and lesbians to the funerals of Sandy Hook victims. One local state Senator says it's uncalled for.
"I think it's unfathomable that they would use a moment where 20 precious little angels had been taken from us to make a political statement," said Benaquisto.
Benaquisto is working to pass legislation she sponsored last year which would create a 500 foot buffer zone at funerals for military, emergency workers, or minors in Florida and it's aimed at demostrations like those being held by the Kansas church.
We reached out to the Kansas church and we finally got a call back.
They told us many states have enacted legislation to prevent thier demonstrations but it won't stop them.
"We are going to continue to deliver these words in whatever fashion wr are able to," said the church.
In the meantime, a small tight knit New England community tries to get back to normal.
