Lee County manager Hawes under fire to leave
LEE COUNTY - County Manager Karen Hawes remains silent about stepping down. We paid a visit to her office today to try and get some answers.
After we turned off our camera we were told the County Manager wasn't available for comment. Fox 4 has learned Hawes asked Commissioner Frank Mann on Monday to hold off on bringing up a removal vote at Tuesday mornings meeting. Many Commissioners are angry Hawes apparently knew about the Medstar issues but did not bring them up to Commissioners.
"She would like to go out with her head held high," said Mann.
All it would take is three votes by Commissioners to send Hawes packing. Commissioner Brian Bigelow has already said publicly he would like to see Hawes gone. So, we asked Commissioner John Manning his thoughts.
"She's going to come back with an exit strategy and we will go from there," Manning.
Then we asked Commissioner Tammy Hall.
"I think we need a discussion," said Hall.
Commissioner Mann says if Hawes leaves she will receive her yearly 170 thousand dollar salary and the commission could skip a severance if they fire her.
