FORT MYERS, Fla. - Anyone under the age of 18 years old will have to be indoors two hours earlier under a new ordinance that took effect on Monday in Ft. Myers.
Minors can no longer hang around public places within city limits after 9:00pm Sunday - Thursday, which is two hours earlier than a curfew that had already been in effect for the city.
On Friday and Saturday nights, minors will have to be off the streets by 11:00 p.m., instead of midnight.
Exceptions would be made for anyone under 18 years old who is participating in a church function, school event or coming home from a job, which they must be able to prove.
"If it's a continuing problem... we encounter the youth on a couple more occasions then it could result in a citation," said Cpt. Jim Mulligan of the Ft. Myers Police Department.
Last year alone, roughly 380-juveniles were arrested for committing crimes in Ft. Myers.
Back in August, city leaders decided to move the curfew times with the hope of keepings kids out of trouble.
The city council will try out the new curfew for six months before deciding whether to make it permanent.
