FWC shoots aggressive black bear in Collier Co.
NAPLES - A bear that was roaming the streets of a community in Ave Maria was shot and killed on Sunday.
“We received a call from one of our biologist that she needed assistance in having one of our officers respond to the scene to try to coral a bear," said FWC spokesperson Jorge Pino.
Officials were first called to the scene after a resident said the bear was rummaging through trash.
"We have accounts that the bear had actually approached a woman that was washing her car outside."
The bear was also seen inside the open garage of a home.
FWC said the animal’s behavior was very unusual, which included becoming aggressive.
Crews tried to chase the animal away, using loud noises, which usually works, but did not in this case.
"The officer felt that there was not much he could do other than shoot the bear after the bear came at him."
FWC officials say they think the bear had gotten so used to people that it no longer feared human.
